The most significant announcement by far at the conference was the release date for Windows Server 2008 (formerly codenamed "Longhorn" server) which will ship on February 27 2008 along with SQL Server 2008 and Visual Studio 2008. Windows Server 2008 truly embraces 64 bit computing and leverages the 64 bit power along with advanced virtualization technologies to really bring the Windows server product line to a new level. Some of the other new features of Windows 2008 Server include a "core" installation without a GUI and with only the services you require being installed allowing for more of the hardware power to be harnessed for the services you need. Windows PowerShell will be fully integrated into Windows 2008 Server making common administration tasks simpler and more efficient than ever before. Terminal Services gets some significant improvements in Windows 2008 Server with both Remote Programs (application publishing without an entire desktop) and Terminal Services Gateway allowing for easier connectivity over HTTPS. While it might seem a little soon for a new SQL server release there were a lot of features that Microsoft wanted to include in SQL Server 2005 but are now being released in 2008. SQL Server 2008 aims to make data management self-tuning, self organizing, and self maintaining with the development of SQL Server Always On technologies, to provide near-zero downtime. Another aspect of SQL Server 2008 will be significant changes in the abilities of SQL Server to store digital media and content within SQL databases and leverage the new capabilities of Visual Studio 2008. Visual Studio 2008 will leverage the technologies introduced in Windows Vista, Office 2007 and other new Microsoft products such as Silverlight (enabling rich web based client experiences).

In addition to the new product announcements there was also a lot of excitement about the enhancements coming to existing products such as Windows Vista, Office 2007 and the Systems Center suite of products. Customers who own Vista with software assurance now have the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack available providing a whole set of management enhancements for your network. Office 2007 has been getting a large number of enhancements via OBAs (Office Business Applications) which are simple plug-ins to existing Office 2007 environments from both Microsoft and a wide range of Microsoft Partners extending the base functionality of Office 2007. System Center Operations Manager 2007 and it's midmarket counterpart System Center Essentials 2007 are set to receive a significant boost in the next few months with the release of System Center Remote Operations Manager 2007 which will provide for client Systems Center deployments to report up to a manage service providers system allowing partners like Broadview Networks to dynamically monitor, manage and help maintain clients networks.
